Guest Post - Susan Shipe - 52 Commands of Jesus for Children & Sitting Among Friends #85

Welcome this week's Guest Post from Author Susan Shipe and stick around for this week's Sitting Among Friends Linkup.
"So, why a book for children?"
I was asked that question in 2013 when I began 52 Commands of Jesus for Children. I don't remember my answer then but now that the book is finished and on the great big bookshelf at Amazon I can clearly look back and see the "back story" of 52 Commands!
For years our pastor taught the 49 commands of Christ and the teachings impacted me with the truth and relevancy of Jesus' words spoken two thousand years ago. And, as God does, He whispered a suggestion that the teachings in the Gospels needed to be created into a book for parents to use with their children.
Yes, Lord.
I began writing with great excitement and eagerness. I was seven commands "in" and suddenly I went dry. In all honesty, I found myself intimidated writing for children. THIS IS IMPORTANT, LIFE-CHANGING material and I felt inadequate. I have written for children before - short stories based on Biblical truth and focusing on the stories 'between the lines." I've written a story on the birth of Jesus and a story about Malchus, the man who had his ear cut off! Yet the commands of Jesus, red words from the Gospels, needed to be spot on with no room for error.
I did not want to insert my own deep doctrinal beliefs, I wanted each parent or facilitator to use her or his passion to teach the command and the character quality that coincides with it. 52 Commands of Jesus for Children is a jumping off place for parents and teachers to take the children as far as they can based on the ages and maturity of the child/children being taught.
Feeling intimidated and inadequate the material was filed and shelved. Fast forward to March 2017. I had just completed 40 Days of Lent and was enjoying a few days rest from writing. I asked the Lord to show me what was next! Because He is God and always finishes what He begins He clearly told me there would be no more books until 52 Commands was completed. I rolled up my sleeves, dusted off the file folder, and opened the Word document! With much prayer, I dug in. I am so glad I did.
The words of Jesus are powerful!
Parents and teachers will be challenged by the questions and suggestions in the book - are they living and breathing examples of the character qualities? Our children reflect us, whether good or bad, they do as we do not necessarily what we say! Each lesson includes a coloring page. Additional coloring pages can be downloaded from my blog site for those who wish to keep their book unmarked and for those with more than one child. For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Hebrews 4.12 (NLT)
Week 45 teaches the 45th command, "Watch and Pray," with the character quality endurance. About ten years ago the Holy Spirit planted this endurance word deep within my spirit - it hasn't left yet so He must have seriously meant it. What does endurance look like in 2017? Two thousand years ago in a garden of great angst, Jesus, the Son of God asked a couple of men to watch and pray with and for Him. They fell asleep. Their temptation? They were tired. O! God May I not fall asleep when the Spirit of the living God speaks deep things to me or, simply tells me to get out of bed and pray on my knees. I want to endure.
The images will help paint that important picture of the character quality being taught.
I know how hard it is for families to create and sustain a quiet time with young children. I suggest beginning each devotion on a Sunday afternoon or evening. The lesson and exercises can be incorporated for one full week - think of the opportunities! Each lesson has three to five simple sections for teaching and sharing. Wouldn't it be wonderful for families to sit at the dinner table three times a week with this devotional book in the hands of the parent, each child with a box of coloring pencils and a color page, and after dinner they linger five to ten minutes with The Word and each other.
O! How pleased our heavenly Father would be!

Rejoice! and Sitting Among Friends #84

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (NIV)

This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

7-17-17.
My son and daughter were up to some shenanigans. My son apparently got the brunt end of the matter, literally.  But was this the tipping point for His next decision?

God has a way of bringing us to Him. I am not always sure what or why or how He does it but He can certainly pull it off.

I have been praying that something in him, my son, would change. That God would change Him. More importantly that God would choose Him to be His own.

A Mother’s One Cry! God, let my children be your own.

I feel He has chosen me to be their mother but let’s be honest. I am lacking. In so many ways that only God will do. I Need Him. I need Him desperately.

So, after the incident, it happened! A moment I have been waiting for.

As my son sat on the couch, the realization seemed to flood him. "I trust Jesus. I need Him. Without Him I am nothing. I am everything through Him." He kept repeating these sweet words.

WOW!  I was overwhelmed. Here he is, 10-years-old and the Holy Spirit is flooding over him. And I got to witness it. It was beautiful. It was exciting! The crimson blood seemed to wash over him.

He wanted me to pray again with Him and this time when he asked, I sensed something was different. And I asked Him. Did you ask Jesus to come into your heart?

YES!

Praise the Lord! He said, YES!

And she treasured these things in her heart!

This mother’s deepest desire for her children to know Christ as their personal Savior. More than anything I want them to have Jesus come into their lives and rescue them.

It is my prayer. Lord please chose them to be your own.

For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence. In love, He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the Beloved One. Ephesians 1:4-6 (BSB)

In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will for us, the ones having first trusted in Christ, to be to the praise of His glory, And in Him you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, having heard and believed the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Ephesians 1:11-13 (BSB)

I don’t know how this works. It seems as if we are offered this gift and we can choose to take it and then we look back and the sign reads “Chosen before the foundations of the earth.”

This is the part, where I say God is God and I am glad I am not Him. I don’t know how He works out this system but I know He does. I know He can and I know He will.

I didn’t want to overwhelm him so I let it settle. I wanted to talk to him and tell him of some of the things that happened and assure him these things happen instantly and can't be taken away from you.

If you are a new believer who is searching for your identity in Christ or a long-time believer that needs your heart refreshed (and who doesn’t) These few verses in Ephesians give us so much hope.

Your Identity

You can see Christ's heart in these verses and out of them pours your identity. We have a purpose and most importantly we have hope.

You are chosen to be holy and blameless in His sight.

You are adopted as His sons and daughters. You are family.
You are in His will and He finds pleasure in you.

You have been freely given His glorious grace through His beloved.

You are chosen as His own.

You have God’s will working for the good in your life.

You are the praise of His Glory.

You are sealed with the promise of the Holy Spirit.

You believe the Word of Truth and the Gospel of your Salvation.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. In Christ, you are so much more. On top of all these amazing things. The Bible also says we are redeemed, free from bondage, robed in righteousness, bought with the blood of the lamb, justified, sanctified, and all to someday be glorified.

If you are reading this today and you are not sure where you stand with Christ, I would love to continue this conversation with you. Feel free to contact me by sending an email to youresewtrendy@gmail.com

If you have made the decision for follow Christ. Tell someone. I know this can be difficult but Romans 10:9 says, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

We can’t have news this amazing and keep it to ourselves. God is working. God is moving in the lives of others through us. Be the change they need today.

Personal Reflections:

Have you asked Christ to be the Lord and leader of your life?

Do you need someone to pray for you today or to be interceding on your behalf?

If you have asked Christ into your life, what was one thing that helped in the beginning with your walk with Him?

How can you do that for someone else in your life right now?

List 10 things you can rejoice the Lord for right now!

Thank you for joining me today in Rejoicing in this very special moment! Please pray for my son to grow in God's graces!

Verses to Guide Your Path and Sitting Among Friends #83

If we are finding the delight and joy of our lives in the Lord, He will give us our desires because our desires will be Him.

Many times, during my life, I thought I was on the right path. I had trodden a trail that seemed familiar and recognizable.

At times, it felt as if I had taken a wrong turn but the longer I was on the path, the more forks I had encountered, the road seemed to be leading me to happiness.

Until it, all came to a head. As I look back it seems it was a dead end. A path that went in circles that lead me to right back to me.

That may have been okay if I had never let myself down. If I had never disappointed myself or been reluctant to forgive myself and at times love myself. But none of those things were true of myself.

If there is one thing I learned from my travels on that dry dusty path it is that God is amazingly gracious and unbounding in love and forgiveness. He is all the things that I am not but so desperately need.

Sometimes life is just that. A well-worn path that appears to be the right road.

We feel like we are making progress or are getting on by our own means but in hindsight, it is just the wrong way. We may find the only way to go forward is to get off that road and go back and find the right one.

The Bible gives us a lot of guidance about being on the path that follows Christ. We not only get assurance that it is the right road but we have a hope that we are not left on the path alone.

Lean into God

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

The wisdom of Proverbs tells us that our understanding is not dependable, but God’s is. We can lean on Him. He will show us which path is right when we are seeking His will.

His Word Will Guide Your Path

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 NLT

My path can seem dimly lit even to the point I am not sure that I am on the right one. With God, our paths will be brightly shining so we can be sure that we have a proper footing.Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Psalm 24:5 NLT

My path can seem dimly lit even to the point I am not sure that I am on the right one. With God, our paths will be brightly shining so we can be sure that we have a proper footing.

Lead me, LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies-- make your way straight before me. Psalm 5:8 NIV

When in God's Word, we can be sure that the road signs point us to Christ and to righteousness. Even if we are lead down the path of our enemies, God will be there to guide us back to the righteous path that leads us back to Him.

I Am Alive in Christ

I confidently believed that following the desires of my heart and being my own independent person were going to lead to my ultimate happiness.

Those ideas are widely promoted. They sound good. They sound promising.

Those ideas are the well-trampled path of the world. It may seem unnatural and counterproductive to believe anything else.

In reality and with eternal perspective those ideas are completely opposite to what the Bible teaches.

Sure, the Bible says God will give you the desires of your heart but it follows the phrase, Delight yourself in the Lord.

If we are finding the delight and joy of our lives in the Lord, He will give us our desires because our desires will be Him.

So instead of this never-ending self-centered circle where my life revolves around me, I place God in the center and He becomes my absolute joy. Then my desires will be fulfilled.

Galatians 2 says with Christ I have been crucified. I need to put myself aside because to really live I must live through Christ. When I put my faith in Him and His death and resurrection, He lives in me.

Because He lives in me, I AM ALIVE!

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 NIV

He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. Psalm 25:9 NIV

Dear Heavenly Father, I stand humbly before you. Lord, my greatest desire is to know you more, be obedient to your ways, and find my delight and joy in you. Lord, you are the path that leads to holiness, righteousness, and all the greatest desires of my life. May I live my life not on the well beaten path that the world has already laid before me but the path that leads to the glorious richness of your beauty. May I live my days with an eternal perspective that makes my life here joyful and consistent with your ways. Lord, lead me, guide me, and help me to live each day seeking you.

In your precious name. Amen

Personal Reflections:

Are you able to look back to a well-worn path in your life and see where God changed your perspective?

A life with Christ begins by recognizing that we are going the wrong way and we need to turn to the way that Christ leads us. Have you made the decision to turn to God’s way? If you would like to continue this conversation or have questions, feel free to contact me.

What do you use as a marker for a well-worn path? How do you help others follow that same path?

Have you trodden a path for the next generation leading them to Christ?

Let Freedom Ring and Sitting Among Friends #82

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend for everyone who celebrated. One thing I love about holidays is spending time with family.

With that being said, I think it is essential to take the time to step away and focus on family and that is what we did today.

Here in the Midwest, it is always raging hot on the fourth and this day was no exception. Our family fourth tradition includes going to two parades, collecting lots of candy, cookouts, and fireworks. 🎆 We have done this since I have been a kid and there is something wonderful about continuing those traditions with my own children.

This is a great opportunity to not only celebrate our freedom as a country but as believers celebrate who we are in Christ.

In Christ, we are free. John 8:36 says, So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

We have been set free from the bonds of sin. Sometimes it is hard to live as free people and if we are not careful we can put ourselves back in that bondage.

Another type of bondage we can place ourselves under is the law. I know in talking with people, as believers it is sometimes really tough not to try to live by the law and it can actually bind us instead of offering us freedom.

Paul talks to the church in Galatia about falling under the false pretenses of the leadership and going back to laws that Christ has freed us from on the cross.

So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law. Galatians 5:1

This is a much deeper topic that I would love to go into but I am going to save that for another time because I want to share to posts that I have previously written about two men in my life that have bravely fought for our freedom.

My husband, dad and son spoerting their new T's from Kerusso
In God We Trust!
My grandfathers were my heroes. They were brave and have helped me understand the beauty that we have in our freedom both in both Christ and as a citizen. I am very excited and proud to share a small piece of their stories.

The first story is about
my paternal grandpa. He was 93 when he passed away 4 years ago. He was an amazing grandpa who stood about five feet tall but was never short on telling us how much he loved us.

In fact, one day I walked into his house and I said, “Hi grandpa” and he looked at me and said, “I love you and don’t you let anyone tell you anything different.” We were surely loved and he wanted us to know. Continue that story here in Men Like Him!

My second story is one of faithfulness. My grandpa (my mom's dad) was not only faithful in service to his country but to his God.

My grandpa was fun, loving, honorable, and faithful. He was devoted endlessly to his family, had a great sense of humor, and a love for Jesus that was undeniable. He spent his life giving back all God had given to him.

My grandpa passed away six weeks before I got married. We were all at the hospital his final week of life. No one wanted to leave him for a moment because we wanted to absorb every second of life that we had left with him.

My grandpa was at such a deep peace. He seemed to be the only one ready to let go. He would call people to his bedside to take the opportunity to witness to them or give them some final life advice. Continue his story here in a Life like His!

Thank you for joining me today!

Thank You, Lord, for deciding who I am!

Seek Him First! Today's Bible Reading

James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of Lights with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

It is of utmost importance that you know that Christ died for you. He died for all sinners so that our relationship with Him could be restored.

Because of His sacrifice on the cross we can have peace. Are you seeking more peace today? Peace of the soul can only be given through the redemptive power of Jesus Christ.

I hope that you, too, know the saving grace of an amazing God.
